Child & adolescent psychiatry
At Geode Health, our providers offer specialized mental health care for children and adolescents. Our child and adolescent psychiatrists are dedicated to supporting children, adolescents, and their families through the psychological and emotional issues related to normal development, as well as diagnosing and treating serious mental health conditions.
What is a child psychiatrist?
A child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health and behavioral conditions in children and adolescents. Child psychiatrists use the latest research-based treatments to help children reach their fullest potential. These treatments may involve psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both.
Is a child psychiatrist the same as a child psychologist?
While child psychiatrists and child psychologists work closely together, they have different training backgrounds and roles. Child psychiatrists are medical doctors who have graduated from medical school and completed residency in psychiatry, along with additional clinical training in child and adolescent psychiatry. Child psychologists have completed graduate school in psychology along with specialized training in child development, behavior modification techniques, educational interventions, and counseling strategies. Psychologists provide a range of services including behavioral assessments, educational testing, and psychotherapy, but they do not prescribe medications. Child psychiatrists and psychologists collaborate as a team with other professionals to develop treatment plans and deliver comprehensive care.
At Geode Health, we offer a range of in-person and telehealth mental health treatment services for individuals of all ages. Our providers are dedicated to helping children and adolescents reach their fullest potential through comprehensive mental health care.
What to expect from an appointment with a child psychiatrist
When you visit a child and adolescent psychiatrist, your Geode provider will listen to your concerns and evaluate your child’s symptoms. They may use questionnaires, diagnostic tests, medical exams, or other assessment tools to form a diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is made, your provider will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that best suits the needs of your child. Your treatment plan may involve a combination of psychotherapy, medication management, or other services. During regular follow-up visits with the psychiatrist, your provider will monitor progress and adjust the treatment as necessary.
