Many psychologists are doctors, but not medical doctors. Psychologists treat a mental health condition (aka mental illness) using talk and other complementary therapies. A Psychiatrist is also a medical doctor (MD). So, they can provide talk and other complementary therapies but primarily treat a mental health condition with medications.
A psychiatrist can prescribe medicine and provide medication management for mental health conditions, which a therapist cannot. Additionally, because a psychiatrist is a medical doctor, they have more extensive training in medical issues that may be related to mental health concerns. However, therapists can provide a wide range of evidence-based talk therapies to help individuals manage their mental health conditions, and may work collaboratively with psychiatrists to provide comprehensive care.
